We all encounter stress in our daily lives that at times can be difficult to manage – affecting the health of our body, mind, emotions and spirit. In addition, many people have experienced traumatic stress due to circumstances such as: , school/workplace pressure, prolonged illness/injuries, mental/physical abuse, bullying, conflicts, environmental disasters, poverty, racism. Professional mental health care has limits because it is accessible to only a few. Practical approaches are needed that can help people, communities and even whole populations deal with managing stress and health challenges.
This Stress Busting series builds on the foundational work of Dr. Patricia Cane. We will introduce Capacitar exercises (www.capacitar.org) that lead to healing, wholeness and peace in the individual, their families, their social networks and the larger community. Through skill-based learning, participants will see how simple techniques can empower us to care for others and our own wellbeing despite what is occurring around us.

How the Body, Mind, Spirit Practices of Capacitar Work
The program of wellness practices was designed to give people skills to heal and transform stress and pain resulting from illness, trauma, violence and the stress of daily life. These practices have been used effectively with a variety of people and cultures including seniors, young people and students, women and families at risk, refugees, prisoners, people with disability, faith leaders, psychologists, social workers, educators and medical professionals. Capacitar has been taught in over 40 countries around the world.
Capacitar practices are relevant for anyone interested in fostering their wellness dealing with stress. Also, this training is for people whose professional and/or volunteer work is in service to those who are affected by stress, poverty, physical or mental illness, abuse, trauma or violence. Using a grass roots, popular education approach (inspired by Paulo Freire), the training enables those working in health, psychology, education, ministry, social work, healing and spirituality to apply the lessons of the training immediately with the people and communities with whom they work.
